These Leicester businesses have been 'named and shamed' for underpaying staff

Two Leicester businesses have been named and shamed for underpaying staff.
Eventful Temps Ltd and Smile and Implant Ltd are among 260 firms identified by the Government as paying some staff below the National Minimum Wage.
Today’s list also includes high street chains Primark and SportsDirect.com as well as football clubs Bristol Rovers, Motherwell, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Torquay Utd.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said between them, the full list of 260 employers underpayed 16,000 workers a total of £1.7 million.
They were fined a total of £1.3 million.
Eventful Temps Ltd, an employment agency with a registered address on Companies House as Melton Road, Leicester, was said to have underpaid 39 workers to the tune of more than £3,000.

The Mercury was unable to trace anyone at the business.
Smile and Implant, in Narborough Road , Leicester was said to have failed to pay more than £1,900 to one worker.
A spokeswoman for the business told the Mercury: “It was a misunderstanding and has been mutually resolved.”
The Government said that since 2013, the naming and shaming scheme had identified £8million in back pay for 58,000 workers, while 1,500 employers had been fined a total of £5million.
This year, it said, the government was spending £25.3million on minimum wage enforcement.
It said businesses involved in retail, hospitality and hairdressing were among the most prolific offenders.
Common reasons for underpayment, it said, included failing to pay workers travelling between jobs, deducting money from pay for uniforms and failing to pay for overtime.

Business Minister Margot James said: “There is no excuse for not paying staff the wages they’re entitled to and the government will come down hard on businesses that break the rules.
“That’s why today we are naming hundreds of employers who have been short changing their workers, and to ensure there are consequences for their wallets as well as their reputation, we’ve levied millions in back pay and fines.”

Primark Stores was third on today’s list, accused of failing to pay £231,973.12 to 9,735 workers.
SportsDirect.com was fourth, alleged to have failed to pay £167,036.24 to 383 workers.
Employers have 28 days to appeal if they are accused of not complying with minimum wage law.
If they do not appeal or unsuccessfully appeals, BEIS will consider them for naming.

The current minimum wage rates are:
National Living Wage (25 years and over) £7.50 per hour.
National Minimum Wage (21 to 24-year-olds) £7.05 per hour.
National Minimum Wage 18 to 20-year olds £5.60 per hour.
National Minimum Wage 16 to 17-year-olds £4.05 per hour.
National Minimum Wage for apprentices under 19, or over 19 and in the first year of an apprenticeship. £3.50 per hour.
The rates are due to rise next February.
