Hastings Direct has recently described how it is looking to recruit people in Leicester.
The firm already employs more than 700 people in the city – but is now looking to add to that number.
We’ve been speaking to the company’s Your Career Project Executive Francesca Starr about how people can apply.

What does the company do?
Hastings Direct is an agile, data and digitally focused general insurance provider.
We provide refreshingly straightforward insurance services to the UK car, van, bike and home insurance market.
What are the main job types within the business?
At Hastings Direct we have a huge number of roles which drive forward our business.
Our contact centres are an integral part of our success which strives to provide exceptional service to new and existing customers.
How many clients do you have?
2.4 million live customer policies
How many offices are there in the UK and how many people do you employ in each?
We employ more than 2,700 colleagues at sites in Bexhill, Newmarket and Leicester.
How many staff are there in Leicester?
Over 730 colleagues.

How has that figure grown year on year?
Our Leicester site opened in 2015 and we have been growing ever since.
In summer 2016 we had 400 colleagues and this number has now grown to over 730 and we still have space for more colleagues to join us.
Our city centre office in Leicester will allow us to house 1,200 colleagues.
Do you have an apprenticeship programme and how does that work?
At Hastings Direct we recognise that apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for us to develop colleagues which is why we are currently building a great programme.
Our apprenticeships will be for everyone – whether you are leaving school or thinking about a career change.
Our apprenticeships will be paid roles which offer you training as well as the chance to achieve a professional qualification.

Do you have a training academy and how does that work?
When colleagues join Hastings Direct they will be provided training which caters for both full time and part-time new starters
Throughout the induction period colleagues are supported by trainers who help each person to gain the skills and insurance expertise needed to help our customers and offer them a straightforward experience.
Do you run other programmes to recruit staff?
Yes, we do offer direct entry into our customer representative and claims first responder roles in Leicester.
How many trainees, apprentices, graduates and new recruits will you be taking on in the next 12 months?
We do not have the exact figures yet, however you can see from our growth in Leicester that we are committed to attracting good quality colleagues and offering them career development within our organisation.

What attributes do your staff need?
We do not look for specific experience, but focus very much on the personality and strengths of each candidate we see in order to recruit colleagues who will enjoy our working environment and can thrive in our culture of team work, customer service and high performance.
What big changes has your business seen in recent years?
The growth of the use of technology has been significant and will continue to be so as part of our strategy to utilise technology to provide even better service for our customers.
Which training organisations, colleges and universities do you work with and how would you describe the support they offer you and the recruits?
We have a strong working relationship with JobCentre Plus and Leicester College.
They facilitate a four week customer service upskill course on a monthly basis to provide long-term unemployed with a refresher on customer service. We deliver a CV and interview skills workshop as part of the course for all who attend.
We are also part of the Employer Advisory Panel at De Montfort University and contribute towards their employability workshops.
